1700s British London Champleve Dial Pair Cased Antique Verge Fusee Pocket Watch

Beautiful British verge pocket watch by Nicholas Prevost. The outer case diameter is 57mm, inner case is 50mm. Weight is hefty 141 grams. The watch is signed by N. Nicholas Prevost , recorded by Baillie, circa 1710. The watch is a good example of British watchmaking of late XVII / early XVIII. Movement features tulip pillars and cock with D-shaped foot – these details appeared about 1690s and disappeared to 1710. The engraving also makes think about 1700. The case hasn’t any hallmarks, what isn’t surprising for such an early watch. Besides inner case is later polished.. Condition The watch appears to be in good condition. Movement is nice and clean, appeared to be in good running condition and works in every position. Champleve silver dial seems to be free from defects. Case is in good condition with some period wear. 1700’s Silver Repousse Fancy Painted Dial English Pair Cased Verge Fusee 47mm

Up for sale is an interesting sterling silver repousse English verge fusee pocketwatch with a fancy painted dial. The outer case is about 47mm in diameter. The repousse scene shows some wear. The porcelain dial has a wonderful painted scene. The dial has a few hairlines and a small chip on the number 25. The painted section is fine. The glass crystal is not high domed like it should be, and the cannon pinion has been shortened to accommodate the lower crystal. The movement is signed Wm Crayton London. The fusee movement runs for a while, and then stops. Due to the nature of verge movements, I cannot guarantee the accuracy of the watch or that the movement will run continuously. Beautiful verge pocket watch by James Markwick – eminent British watchmakers. The craftsmanship is excellent as you can expect from reputable watchmaker. The dial bears Lion and Unicorn symbolics – probably as sign of Supplier to the King status. He became member of Clockmakers company in 1692, Master of Clockmaker’s company in 1720, died in 1730. Watches in British Museum. Later partner with Robert Markham, who succeeded him using the trading name of Markwick Markham, which became famous for watches destined for the Turkish market. Quite unusually for British pair case watches, both cases bears serial number 3053 and outer is hallmarked by RB. The casemaker Richard Blundell registered this hallmark in 1682. Video will open in a new window. Condition The watch appears to be in good condition. Movement is nice and clean, appeared to be in good running condition and works in every position. Champleve silver dial is in good condition. Case is in good condition with some period wear. Diameter of outer case is 57mm, thickness is 33mm, weight is 147 gramms. Beautiful big and solid pair cased verge fusee onion watch, circa 1700. Signed by Fromantel & Clarke. Both inner and outer cases are made of solid 22k gold. This watch was probably produced for French clientele, outer case is decorated with arabesques in style of French Louis XIV onions. Watch is very nice, high quality piece. It also features date indication. The movement made in manner of 1700s, features beautiful pierced & engraved cock with D-shaped leg, tulip pillars, steel balance bridge. Fromanteel & Clarke Ahasuerus I Fromanteel was member of Blacksmith company in 1630 and member of Clockmaking Company in 1632. He was the first, who introduced pendulum clocks in England. His son, Ahasuerus II became member of Clockmaking Company in 1663. In 1680, Ahasuerus II Fromanteel moved from London to Amsterdam, where he started in 1693 patnership with his son-in-law, Christopher Clarke. Ahasuerus II Fromanteel died in 1703, but Clarke used this signature till 1720. Please note, that watch is big and thick, much larger than pair cases watches of mid-XVIII. The weight only the two cases are about 77 grams, total weight is 156 grams. Diameter of outer case is 56mm, thickness is 30mm. Condition The porcelain dial in Dutch style is in good condition with couple of tiny, hardly visible imperfections – near center and the spring that locks movement in case. Movement is in running condition, works in every position, but I don’t guarantee time keeping. Case is in good condition, though engraving is worn in the center, as you can see on the photos. Bull-eye mineral glass, beetle & poker hands. Beautiful watch in good condition, don’t miss it. Very nice big and thick Dutch verge fusee watch. The dial and movement are signed by Jan van Ceulen Le Jeune – Hagae. The watch is very nice. It features repousse silver outer case in truly remarkable, hard to find condition, with most delicate details preserved. The silver champleve dial is made in British style, without typical Dutch style wavy minute circle. The cock with D-shaped leg has symmetrical design and is decorated with fairy birds. It’s very finely made with attention to small details. Movement also feature nice openwork tulip pillars. Jean (Jan, John) van Ceulen Le Jeune is member of famous Dutch clockmaking dynasty. His watch from 1700 is described in Britten’s classical book p. Baillie book also mentions watches by van Ceulen Le Jeune in Ashmolean collection and watch with enamels of Huaud brothers. Condition Condition is quite nice. Dial is in good condition with few minor defects. Movement is running in every position though I don’t guarantee time keeping. The silver case appears to be in good condition. Outer case diameter is 57mm, height is 61mm, thickness is 34mm. Very nice watch in good collector condition. Video will open in a new window.
