Elgin Pocket Watch, Solid 8k Gold, 6s, 1887, Hunter Case, Grade 94, Clean. This watch is housed in a solid 8K case. Hinges are crisp and even 90 degrees. Case halves snap shut secure and hold well. Elgin 18 size pocket watch in B. Co (Brooklyn Watch Case Company) Granger 14K/8k hunter case. Good working order, running strong and keeping time. Some hairlines on dial. Glass crystal in good condition. Case is very clean. Serial number of movement is 3061974. Cuvette (dust cover) has a Christmas inscription dated 1888. Granger grade case seems to be well documented as a 14k over 8k gold case. Please do your own research…. There’s a lot of information posted on collector forums. I have electronically tested the case at 6 points, and it tested at 12k in 5 areas and 10k in one area. The overall weight of the watch is 133.2 grams. The case weight with case springs in place, but with crystal, stem, crown, and movement removed, is 61.7 grams. The case springs are difficult to remove and often leads to damage when trying to remove them, so I can only estimate the springs weight to be a few grams. I actually weighed 7 case springs (a couple from 18 size, and couple of them are weighted springs) and the total weight of 7 springs was 8.8 grams (can send a photo on request). Thus, I will estimate case weight without springs is 57 grams (which assumes the springs weigh more than the other I have weigh). Outside Diameter: 55.8mm. Inside Diameter/Movement Diameter: 44mm. Ok, overall condition for its age. There are scratches on the case. There is discoloration on the crystal. The crown is worn. I think the crystal bezel is not original. It is missing the crystal. The hunter lid functions correctly, but it doesn’t swing out as far as it should.
